Pros

  • International calling and texting without limitations

Cons

  • App is a notorious battery hog while running in background
  • Frequent, unexplained crashes are the norm here
  • Ads can only be removed with a paid subscription

TextPlus Free Text+Calls offers texting and calling without a cellular data plan. A device doesn't even need a SIM card to take advantage of the app. Currently, Android users can download the app and use their internet connection to communicate with others. The app provides users with a VoIP number unique to their device, which functions like a regular phone number. Is the app worth downloading for free calls and texts?

During initial setup, users will choose from a handful of available numbers. The phone number is usually based on a person's primary location or ZIP code. From there, a user can import their contacts by granting the app a few permissions. They're then able to place calls or send and receive texts like normal. Users don't need to use a phone plan with minutes or texts with this app, but they can use mobile data, if desired.

TextPlus Free Text+Calls can run completely from a data or internet connection. The calling and texting features work as intended more often than not. It's nice to be able to send MMS messages as well. However, this particular app suffers from excessive battery drain while running, even in the background. Users may notice constant crashing on certain devices, and the ads remain quite intrusive unless a subscription is purchased.

For many people, free international calling and texting make this app a must-have. TextPlus Free Text+Calls succeeds more often than it fails. Plenty of similar apps are available that work with an internet connection. Some of those apps come with more features and less software issues, though.
